Tulista minima var. poellnitziana — Poellnitz's pearl plant
🌱 Morphology
An especially elegant form of Tulista minima, slow-growing and typically forming a solitary rosette, although it can produce small clusters. Its leaves are noticeably longer and narrower than those of the typical form, reaching up to about 18 cm, greyish-green in color with a rough surface covered in small, raised white tubercles. The leaves, erect or slightly spreading, give the plant a more open and slender appearance. The flowers have yellowish tepal tips, a distinctive feature noted by Bruce Bayer.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It originates from the Western Cape of South Africa, in the Drew–Swellendam–Robertson area, occupying the westernmost end of the range of T. pumila. It grows in fynbos vegetation on ancient river gravel deposits, in a region with predominantly winter rainfall. It belongs to Asphodelaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frost, especially if the substrate remains damp.
☀️ Lighting
It requires abundant light to maintain a compact rosette and good greyish-green coloration. Lighting of 12–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended during active growth, with gradual adaptation to direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It comes from a winter-rainfall region and is most active from autumn to spring. It is recommended to water thoroughly during the active period when the substrate is completely dry. During the summer, rising temperatures and reduced rainfall cause a marked decrease in activity, so watering should be significantly spaced out.
🌸 Flowering
Like other Tulista, it blooms mainly in spring and early austral summer. It produces a robust, branched inflorescence with whitish tubular flowers, whose tepal tips show the characteristic yellowish hue of this variety. There is no reliable data on the exact age of first flowering.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
