🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, acaulescent and cespitose, forming clusters of compact rosettes about 5–7 cm in diameter. Each rosette typically has 6–8 opposite, short, fleshy, and spatulate leaves with rounded tips. The surface is covered with small whitish, grayish, yellowish, or brownish warts, arranged with great regularity, which resemble a set of tiny pearls embedded in the leaf. Leaf coloration can vary between grayish green, bluish, pinkish, or brownish. The plant remains extraordinarily camouflaged among the stones and quartz of its habitat.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its distribution range extends across southern Namibia and reaches into northern South Africa, including Klein Karas, eastern Namaqualand, and Bushmanland. It grows on limestone plains or quartzitic surfaces, often among gravel and stones where it is practically indistinguishable from the terrain. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC, provided the substrate is kept dry. There are cultivation references indicating considerably higher resistance, but for DesertSTORE, it is more consistent to use the USDA 9b zone backed by horticultural sources rather than turning an occasional instance of resilience into a cultivation guarantee.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very intense lighting to maintain its compact habit and fully develop the coloration and characteristic warts of the leaves. During active growth, a target of DLI PAR >20 mol/m²/day is recommended. It can be grown in full sun once it has been well acclimated.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a species that grows primarily in cool weather, with activity from autumn to spring. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, water supply should be significantly reduced, although in very hot climates it may need minimal watering to prevent excessive dehydration. Excess humidity is especially dangerous during dormancy.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary, daisy-like flowers, pale yellow to canary yellow, about 15–18 mm in diameter. They open in the afternoon and appear mainly in late winter and early spring in the Southern Hemisphere. In Madrid, approximately February–March.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering while avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
7 × 7 cm gourmet black pot.
