🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, acaulescent or with a very short stem, forming rosettes of about 4–5 cm and eventually small clusters. The leaves are thick, short, and triangular to spatulate in shape, with a green base and an upper end that is extraordinarily rough, covered in tubercles and protuberances that resemble small limestone fragments. The coloration can vary from green, gray, and bluish to reddish or purple tones, while the warts can be white, gray, or brown. This extraordinary combination of texture and color provides exceptional camouflage among the stones of its habitat.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is distributed from southern Namibia to eastern Namaqualand and Bushmanland, in South Africa. It grows in deserts and dry scrublands, especially on limestone outcrops and calcareous surfaces covered by red sand. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae. SANBI currently considers it Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–12. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC, provided the substrate is kept dry. The RHS considers it a succulent for protected cultivation and recommends full sun, excellent drainage, and keeping it dry outside its active period.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light to maintain its compact habit and develop the characteristic coloration and texture of the leaves. During active growth, a target of DLI PAR >20 mol/m²/day is recommended. Good sun exposure also intensifies the reddish and purple tones that may appear on the leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. This species is adapted to winter rainfall and is mainly active during the cool seasons. During active growth, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before repeating. In summer, it should be kept practically dry, especially during periods of intense heat.
🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary flowers, resembling small daisies, usually yellow, although yellow-orange and occasionally pink shades may appear. They open in the afternoon and reach approximately 2–3 cm in diameter. Flowering is concentrated in autumn and winter; in Madrid, approximately October–February.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable Xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
