Stenocereus griseus (Haw.) Buxb.
🌱 Morphology
Arborescent cactus that can reach 6–9 m in height, forming a highly branched crown, with gray-green or slightly glaucous vertical stems about 9–12 cm in diameter. It can reach up to 10 meters in height. It features 6–10 well-defined ribs, with areoles spaced 2–3 cm apart. It develops 1–3 central spines, the largest up to 4 cm, accompanied by about 6–11 whitish or gray radial ones. With age, it acquires its characteristic candelabra shape.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is distributed from Mexico to Guatemala and northern South America, including Colombia, Venezuela and the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. It inhabits xerophytic scrublands and tropical deciduous forests, from sea level up to about 1200 m, in regions with a marked dry season. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC when kept dry and for well-acclimatized specimens. It is a tropical species and must be protected from frost and, especially, from cold humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and plenty of light to develop vigorous growth and a compact branched structure. A DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended during active growth, with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. In Mediterranean cultivation, it is advisable to significantly reduce irrigation during the cold months. During the warm period, it tolerates abundant watering, always allowing the substrate to dry out completely. In its habitat, it withstands a marked dry season.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large white, tubular, nocturnal flowers, up to about 10 cm in length, which remain open until approximately the following noon. The outer segments may show greenish, pink, or purple tones. It can flower during much of the year, and in certain populations flowers have been recorded for 9–12 months, although the intensity depends on local conditions. It is self-sterile, so it requires pollen from another genetically compatible specimen to produce seeds. Its fruit is known as "Iguaraya" by the Wayúu people as it has a high protein content.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
