🔍 Morphology:
Slow-growing caudiciform shrub that can reach about 4 m in its habitat. It develops a very thickened trunk at the base, which can approach 1 m in diameter in adult specimens, and erect, thick, and rigid branches, with short spines. The bark is grayish, sometimes with yellowish patches. Its deciduous leaves are small, oblong, grayish-green, and with a surface covered in glands. Its sculptural architecture makes it a highly prized species among caudiciform collectors.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family: It is native to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and northern South Africa. It grows in warm and dry regions, on sandy, stony, or clay soils with adequate drainage.
It belongs to the family Pedaliaceae.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 10b. It tolerates minimum temperatures close to +5 ºC as a safe cultivation reference. It is sensitive to frost and damp cold, so it is recommended to protect it during the Madrid winter.
☀️ Lighting: It needs plenty of light and appreciates direct sun when well acclimated. Bright exposure favors the compact development of the branches and the formation of a characteristic silhouette. As a cultivation reference, a PAR DLI of 20–25 moles of daily photons is recommended, avoiding excessive heat buildup in the pot.
🌸 Flowering: It produces large, solitary, and tubular flowers, in white, cream, or pink, often with purple tones on the outside. In the southern hemisphere, it blooms mainly during the spring, approximately between September and December. After pollination, it develops woody capsules with winged seeds.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Seasonal dormancy in winter. During the warm period and active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. When it loses its leaves and its activity decreases, watering should be greatly reduced. During dormancy, it needs a very well-draining substrate and protection from damp cold.
🚀 Nutrition: During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, with assimilable potassium and calcium, avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
📏 Gourmet black pot of 7×7x 9 cm.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
