Senecio longiflorus (DC.) Sch.Bip.
🌱 Morphology
Succulent subshrub with an upright habit, featuring green, rigid, deeply grooved stems that become woody with age. The leaves are small, fleshy, elongated, and cylindrical, resembling small sausages; they are sparsely arranged and may drop during dry periods. It can reach approximately 60–120 cm in height. Its bare silhouette and green, almost sculptural stems give it a unique appeal even outside of flowering.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
Family Asteraceae, tribe Senecioneae. Its distribution area extends across much of sub-Saharan Africa, from Namibia and Botswana to regions of East and Southern Africa, with populations also found in Arabia. It grows in dry environments, among rocks, on stony slopes and under scrubland, where its succulent stems allow it to withstand periods of water scarcity. In current taxonomy, it is also found under the name Kleinia longiflora DC.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9b
Tolerates brief drops close to 0°C if the substrate remains dry. It is recommended to protect it from frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and persistent moisture.
☀️ Lighting
Needs plenty of light and tolerates direct sun after gradual acclimatization. As a guideline, a PAR DLI of 15–25 mol/m²/day is recommended, avoiding sudden changes in exposure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Growth depends on temperature and water availability. It is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During cold periods or when the plant reduces its activity, space out waterings and prevent water from remaining around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
Produces terminal capitula with very elongated tubular flowers, in shades that can vary between white, mauve, and yellow depending on the form. The flowers stand out for their length and for protruding widely from the stems, a characteristic that explains the epithet longiflorus.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, formulated with a high supply of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Reduce or suspend fertilization when growth slows down.
