Sempervivum 'Big Martin' | The Ruby of the Alps

🌱 Morphology
A cultivar with a large rosette, capable of reaching about 10–12 cm in diameter and, in mature specimens, exceeding those dimensions. Its leaves are fleshy, pointed, and arranged in a spiral, forming a compact geometric structure. Its coloration is one of its main attractions: it features reddish-brown and burgundy tones, with a darker, redder central area. The intensity of the color varies with the season, lighting, and temperatures, so it can show different contrasts throughout the year. Over time, it produces numerous lateral rosettes that form dense clumps.
🌍 Origin, genealogy, and family
‘Big Martin’ is a horticultural cultivar of Sempervivum, a genus of succulents adapted to the mountainous environments of Europe and neighboring regions. There is insufficient reliable information about its breeder or its specific genealogy.
Family: Crassulaceae. Subfamily: Sempervivoideae. Tribe: Semperviveae. Its growth habit and coloration make it especially suitable for houseleek collections, rock gardens, and cold-hardy succulent arrangements.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 3
It tolerates minimum temperatures of −40 °C, corresponding to the lower limit of USDA zone 3. Houseleeks are known for their high cold tolerance, although actual tolerance depends on the cultivar, acclimatization, and growing conditions. When potted, it is especially important to prevent the roots from remaining in saturated substrate during the winter.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very bright exposure, preferably full sun, to maintain a compact rosette and promote the dark tones of the leaves. In regions with very hot summers, heat stress should be monitored and good ventilation ensured. As a general cultivation guideline, a PAR DLI of 20–35 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ can be sought, adjusting it to the temperature and the acclimatization of the specimen.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth occurs mainly during spring and summer, while vegetative activity decreases in the cold. It is recommended to water when the substrate is dry and allow excess water to drain completely. During the winter, if the plant remains outdoors and receives rain, it will normally not need additional watering. In very warm climates, it may temporarily slow its growth during periods of intense heat.
🌸 Flowering
When a rosette reaches maturity, it may develop an erect, branched central flower stalk with small star-shaped flowers, usually pink or reddish in this genus. Flowering usually occurs in summer. The flowering rosette dies after completing its reproductive cycle, but the plant continues to grow thanks to the numerous lateral rosettes it has previously formed.
🌿 Nutrition
It is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Succulents during the active growth period, applying it moderately and according to the product instructions. Houseleeks do not need intensive fertilization; an excess of nutrients can promote less compact growth. Abundant light and excellent drainage are essential to maintain their shape and coloration.
