🌱 Morphology

Known as the gypsum sedum. It is a small succulent of the Crassulaceae family, with a compact habit and adapted to extremely mineral conditions. It forms short, branched stems with small, fleshy leaves arranged densely, appearing green to grayish-green. Its morphology is closely related to its adaptation to gypsum-rich substrates. Sedum gypsophilum was specifically described as a species associated with these environments, a characteristic that is unusual among North American Sedum species.

🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family

Family Crassulaceae. Its natural distribution is located in northeastern Mexico, especially in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. It grows in arid and semi-arid environments on gypsum outcrops and soils, where the high concentration of calcium sulfate significantly limits accompanying vegetation. In southern and central Nuevo León, gypsum environments are found at approximately 1,000 to 2,200 m and concentrate numerous highly specialized, restricted-range species.

❄️ Temperature

USDA Zone 8b–10a. It comes from mountainous areas of northeastern Mexico, so it can tolerate relatively low temperatures of down to -7 C when kept dry and well-acclimated. Its specific resistance depends on its origin and cultivation conditions.

☀️ Lighting

It requires plenty of light to maintain compact growth and good coloration.

Indicative DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.

It can be grown in full sun if the plant is gradually acclimated. In very hot summers, slight protection during the hours of peak radiation can prevent thermal stress without excessively reducing light intensity.

💧 Growth cycle and watering

It is a xerophyte adapted to arid environments and extremely aerated substrates. It is recommended to maintain a very well-draining substrate and to water thoroughly, followed by complete drying before watering again.

In Mediterranean cultivation, it can remain active during periods of moderate temperatures, significantly reducing water consumption during periods of extreme heat or cold. In winter, if temperatures are low, it is advisable to keep it practically dry.

🌸 Flowering

It produces small flowers typical of the Sedum genus, grouped in inflorescences. When cultivated in Spain, flowering can be expected mainly during the spring.

🌿 Nutrition

During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, using a moderate concentration and avoiding an excess of nitrogen that encourages overly soft and less compact tissues.

In the weeks prior to flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering to promote balanced blooming.
