🌱 Morphology
The classic... A succulent, perennial, and rhizomatous cultivar that forms erect rosettes of rigid, fleshy, lanceolate leaves. The leaves feature a dark green background with grayish-green transverse bands and a characteristic longitudinal yellow variegation on both margins, which can take on cream-yellow tones. Its habit is upright, and the leaves can exceed 60 cm in length, eventually forming dense clumps via rhizomes.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is a horticultural cultivar of Dracaena trifasciata, a species native to western and central tropical Africa, where it grows mainly in seasonally dry tropical environments and on rocky, dry terrain. The ‘Laurentii’ cultivar has no natural distribution of its own.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC in dry conditions, although it is recommended to protect it from frost and, especially, from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It adapts to different light intensities, from partial shade to bright light. To maintain compact growth and good expression of the yellow variegation, approximately 12–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR DLI is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the warm season, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, water intake is significantly reduced, and the substrate is kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation. It may produce an elevated inflorescence with small clusters of cream or greenish-white tubular flowers with a sweet fragrance. The species can bloom approximately once a year when growing conditions allow.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. It is not recommended to fertilize during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
