🌱 Morphology
Subshrubby succulent with a creeping growth habit, featuring cylindrical, woody stems that can reach about 30 cm before prostrating and branching. The leaves, grayish-green and fleshy, are opposite and closely packed around the stem; they have a triangular to rounded section, sharp tips, and 1–2 small teeth on the keel. It forms extensive, trailing mats, very suitable for covering surfaces or spilling over the edges of a pot.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is distributed from the Great Karoo and Vanrhynsdorp, in Western Cape, to Namibia, in areas with winter rainfall and dry, stony soils with abundant rock fragments. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC in dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. Cold hardiness should be interpreted with caution: the duration of the frost and, especially, the moisture of the substrate can significantly alter its resistance.
☀️ Lighting
It requires full sun and very intense lighting during growth, with a target of >20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. A lack of light causes looser stems and reduces flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a species that grows mainly in winter, although it can remain active for much of the year under favorable conditions. During growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. During the hottest and driest period, water supply should be significantly reduced.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers of about 12–20 mm, pink to purple in color, with white stamens and a sweet scent. They open during the central hours of the day and can appear throughout the year, with particularly notable flowering in spring. In Madrid, it may bloom mainly between March and May, although it is not limited to these months.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
