🌱 Morphology
Small subshrubby succulent, with low, spreading growth, featuring fleshy, branched stems that form a compact mat approximately 10–15 cm tall and up to 50–60 cm wide. The leaves are small, fleshy, and grayish-green, arranged densely along the branches. Over time, it develops a woody base that allows it to form sturdy, long-lived cushions.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, it is widely distributed throughout the Karoo, from the Great Karoo and Beaufort West to Steynsburg and Steytlerville, possibly reaching the Free State. It inhabits various types of scrubland and dry grassland in the interior regions. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 6a–8b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −23 ºC under dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. This high cold tolerance is supported by specialized cultivation experience, although actual resistance depends on humidity, duration of frost, and the state of the plant.
☀️ Lighting
Requires full sun and high light intensity, with a target of >20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during active growth.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active period, it tolerates abundant watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, it is kept much drier, especially in low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Produces solitary, daisy-like flowers in lavender-pink to purple, which stand out against the grayish foliage. Flowering is concentrated in spring, approximately between March and May in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
