Rosularia platyphylla (Schrenk) A.Berger
🌱 Morphology
A true little Asian... A succulent perennial plant that forms compact rosettes approximately 5–10 cm in diameter. Its leaves are fleshy, flat, spatulate or obovate in shape, wider towards the tip and rounded, sometimes slightly scalloped. They are pale green or grey-green and are covered with small glandular hairs that give them a finely velvety texture. The margins may also show visible cilia.
The rosettes grow from a thickened base and can grow separately or form small groups of several individuals. During flowering, it develops ascending stems, generally 5–10 cm long, with smaller leaves and a branched inflorescence that stands above the rosette.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is native to Central Asia, with occurrences in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and the Chinese region of Xinjiang. It grows in mountainous environments, in rock crevices, cliffs and stony slopes, where it has little soil and water drains quickly. It is adapted to sunlight, the temperature fluctuations of continental regions, and periods of water scarcity. Its low-growing habit and compact rosettes make it suitable for rock gardens and collections of mountain succulents.
Family: Crassulaceae. Subfamily: Sempervivoideae. Tribe: Sedeae.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 5
It tolerates minimum temperatures of −28.9 °C, corresponding to the lower limit of USDA zone 5. It is a cold-hardy succulent, adapted to the mountainous environments of Central Asia. It can be grown outdoors in continental climates, provided it has a well-drained growing medium. In a pot, the roots should be protected from excess moisture during the winter, as the combination of cold and waterlogging can cause rot.
☀️ Lighting
It grows well in full sun or bright partial shade. Intense exposure promotes the compact growth of the rosettes, although in regions with very hot summers, some protection during the middle hours of the day is recommended. As a general guideline, a DLI PAR of 15–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ can be used, adjusting it to the temperature and the plant's acclimatization.
💧 Growth and watering cycle
Winter dormancy. It is a cold-hardy mountain species that retains its rosettes during the winter. Its most active growth usually occurs during spring and summer. It is recommended to water when the growing medium is completely dry, allowing the water to drain freely. During the winter, watering should be reduced, especially when temperatures are low and evaporation is reduced. In summer, if grown in a small container and temperatures are high, the moisture of the growing medium will need to be checked more frequently. It is best to avoid repeatedly wetting the foliage, especially in poorly ventilated environments.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering usually occurs between June and July. Erect flower stems emerge from the rosettes, generally 5–10 cm tall, ending in branched inflorescences with numerous small white flowers. Each flower has five petals and a short tubular structure. After flowering, elongated fruits form, containing small brown seeds. The species can be propagated by seed or by separating the side rosettes when they are sufficiently developed.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, following the product's dosage instructions. It does not require intensive fertilization, as it is adapted to stony and relatively nutrient-poor soils. Moderate feeding promotes the development of the rosettes without stimulating excessively soft growth. Adequate lighting and a mineral-based, aerated, fast-draining growing medium are essential to maintain its compact structure.
