🌱 Morphology
Small globose cactus, barely 2 cm in diameter, which produces abundant offsets and can form multi-headed colonies. It has approximately 14 subtle ribs, divided into small rounded tubercles arranged in a spiral. The areoles are oval and woolly, with numerous extended, white, and translucent radial spines, accompanied by some slightly longer central ones, initially light-colored with a darker tip. Its small size and ability to form compact clusters give it the appearance of a small, spiny carpet.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to northwestern Argentina, in the province of Jujuy, where it grows in mountain environments at altitudes between approximately 2,500 and 2,800 m. It is a species adapted to high solar radiation, large thermal fluctuations, and dry periods. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC when kept dry and if the specimens are well-acclimated. In winter, it must be protected especially from the combination of cold, humidity, and wet substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain compact growth and dense spination. During active growth, an approximate integral of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR is recommended, with progressive acclimatization to intense sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Keep practically dry during the winter. In spring, resume abundant but spaced watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During the warm period, it tolerates regular watering provided there is excellent drainage. Excess humidity, especially at low temperatures, can promote root rot.
🌸 Flowering
It flowers from 3 years of age. It produces large flowers in relation to its small body, about 3 cm long and 2.5 cm in diameter. They are intense red in color, with spatulate inner petals and a characteristic darker central line on the outer ones. They appear laterally, forming a spectacular crown around the small heads.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
