🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent of the Aizoaceae family, with compact growth and a rosette appearance, reaching approximately 4 cm in height. The leaves are fleshy, spreading, wide at the base and progressively narrowing towards the apex, up to 5.5 × 1 cm, with characteristic white spotting on the surface. The flowers are solitary and stand out for their golden petals.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is endemic to South Africa and is known from the surroundings of Bloemfontein, in the Free State. It has been cited in grassland and dry scrub environments of the region, although SANBI notes that the species' specific habitat remains unknown. It grows in depressions in the ground and crevices between rocks.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC in dry conditions. This estimate comes from secondary horticultural sources, as there is no sufficiently robust specific botanical reference regarding its thermal resistance.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high light intensity during growth, with a target DLI PAR greater than 20 mol/m²/day. Direct sun promotes a compact structure and better flowering, while avoiding excessive radiation associated with very high temperatures.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It is a species linked to regions with mainly summer rainfall. Growth is concentrated from spring to summer, while during the winter it is advisable to reduce watering significantly, keeping the substrate dry for prolonged periods. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers with golden petals, about 29–34 mm in diameter, with white filaments and pale yellow tips. In the southern hemisphere, they are recorded mainly between October and February; in Madrid, this corresponds approximately to April–August.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
7 × 7 cm gourmet black pot.
