🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, acaulescent and caespitose, with fleshy tuberous roots that can reach about 18 cm and thicken notably with age. It forms low mats of rosettes with 6–8 pairs of opposite, unequal leaves, about 2–3 cm long, dark green to olive green, fleshy, keeled, and covered in small whitish dots or warts. The leaves may remain spread out or stand erect during drought.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Distributed across Free State, Northern Cape, and North West, South Africa, mainly on plains and gentle slopes with fine, clayey, lime-rich soils, often among grasses. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. SANBI lists it as Data Deficient (DD) due to taxonomic issues.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 8a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −12 ºC in dry conditions and for short periods. This figure comes from specialized cultivation references; cold combined with moisture poses a much greater risk.
☀️ Lighting
Requires high light levels to keep rosettes compact and encourage flowering, targeting >20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during active growth. In the warmer months, it may benefit from protection against intense midday sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Primary growth begins in autumn and continues through winter. During the active phase, deep watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next. In summer, it must be kept very dry and cool, providing only enough to prevent excessive dehydration.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary, daisy-like flowers, 2–2.5 cm in diameter, yellow with a characteristic longitudinal red stripe on each petal. It blooms in winter in the Southern Hemisphere, which corresponds approximately to June-August in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
