Myrtillocactus geometrizans ‘Fukurokuryuzinboku’
🌱 Morphology
An extremely unique Japanese cultivar of Myrtillocactus geometrizans, originated from a monstrose mutation. It develops blue-green stems with ribs transformed into large, rounded, softly undulating protrusions that resemble small overlapping breasts. Growth is irregular and much slower than the type species, producing sculptural specimens of great interest to collectors. It can develop branches and, with age and very intense lighting, some spines may appear on specimens that are initially almost spineless.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is a cultivar of Japanese horticultural origin, derived from Myrtillocactus geometrizans, a Mexican species in the Cactaceae family. The natural species inhabits arid and semi-arid regions of central Mexico, where it forms large, candelabra-shaped treelike cacti.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC when kept dry and for short periods, provided the specimen is well acclimatized. For this particularly valuable cultivar, it is recommended to be more cautious and keep it protected from damp cold and prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and direct sun, especially to keep the cultivar's characteristic protrusions compact and well-defined. During active growth, it is recommended to reach a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the cold months, it is kept practically dry. In spring and summer, with active temperatures, it is watered abundantly and spaced out, letting the substrate dry out completely between waterings. Drainage must be excellent: persistent moisture is especially dangerous in the numerous depressions and folds of its stems.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers correspond to those of Myrtillocactus geometrizans: small, white-green to yellowish-white, borne on the areoles of adult stems. The fruits are globose, dark blue or violet, similar to small blueberries, and are edible in the species. In this cultivar, flowering is infrequent and may be conditioned by its monstrose growth.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
