🌱 Morphology
Small, slow-growing, tufted tuberous succulent that forms clumps of short, jointed stems. The segments look like small beads and can reach about 12 cm in height. During active growth, it develops two narrow, elongated, fleshy leaves at each apex, up to about 10 cm, soft and velvety, reminiscent of rabbit ears. When summer arrives, the leaves disappear and the stems are protected by the dry sheaths of the segments.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, in the Western Cape, especially in the Knersvlakte region. It grows on stony ground and quartz fields, forming part of highly specialized plant communities in these habitats. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae. SANBI classifies it as Least Concern (LC), although there are records of illegal collection within the genus.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC, provided it is kept completely dry. The reported resistance is limited and should not be confused with tolerance to prolonged frost.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it needs plenty of light, with a target above 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Gentle autumn and winter sun encourages compact growth; during the summer, when it is dormant, it should be protected from intense heat and harsh direct sunlight.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a strictly winter-growing mesemb: it begins to activate as temperatures drop and days shorten, develops its long leaves during autumn and winter, and progressively enters dormancy as the heat arrives. During active growth, water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely. In summer, it loses its leaves and should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers, up to about 4 cm in diameter, white with a yellow center. They appear mainly during autumn and winter in the Southern Hemisphere, approximately between March and August, so in Madrid, they may correspond approximately to September–February.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
Gourmet 10 × 10 cm black pot.
