🔍 Morphology:
Perennial bulbous plant that develops a large bulb, about 10–15 cm in diameter, covered by papery brown or purplish tunics. In spring, it produces a rosette of wide, lanceolate, grayish-green leaves, sometimes with purple tinges and highly defined veins. The inflorescence rises above the foliage and can reach about 1 m in height, with numerous star-shaped flowers in shades of violet-blue.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family: It is native to Southern Africa, from Malawi to the Eastern Cape province, including South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini. It inhabits rocky slopes, grasslands and damp areas, including near watercourses.
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family, Scilloideae subfamily.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 9a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC under proper conditions, with the bulb protected and the substrate well-drained. In a pot, it is advisable to take extra precautions against intense cold and winter humidity.
☀️ Lighting: It prefers full sun or bright partial shade. Intense light promotes flowering and compact leaf development. As a cultivation reference, an approximate DLI PAR of 15–20 moles of photons per day is recommended, adapting it to the temperature and the plant's activity.
🌸 Flowering: It blooms in spring and early summer. In Madrid, flowering may occur earlier or later depending on the growing conditions and the specimen's cycle. The blue or violet flowers are grouped in elevated spikes and may have a delicate aroma towards dusk.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It is a deciduous bulbous plant with summer growth. During the emergence of leaves and flowers, it needs regular watering, allowing the substrate to drain well. When the leaves turn yellow and disappear at the end of the cycle, watering should be gradually suspended and the bulb kept dry during dormancy.
🚀 Nutrition: During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, with assimilable potassium and calcium, avoiding excess nitrogen.
⚠️ Caution: The bulb is toxic if ingested and the sap can be irritating. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
