Matucana hannei · Hane's Matucana
🌱 Morphology
Globose to shortly cylindrical cactus, solitary or with a tendency to produce basal offsets with age. The body is dark green, with numerous low ribs divided into poorly defined tubercles. The areoles are small and produce fine, generally light-colored radial spines, together with one or more more robust central spines. Over time, it may acquire a slightly columnar habit. It is one of the Matucana species with a compact appearance, featuring a very attractive combination of an intense green body and light-colored spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
This species is endemic to Peru, native to the arid mountainous environments of the Andes. It grows among rocks and on hillsides with high sun exposure, where rainfall is mainly concentrated in the wetter season. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae. The genus Matucana is exclusively South American and reaches its greatest diversity in Peru.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC when kept dry, provided the specimens are well-acclimated. In cultivation, it is recommended to avoid the combination of low temperatures and prolonged humidity, especially in winter.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun, although it is advisable to gradually acclimate specimens grown under protection. As a reference during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the cold period, it is kept practically dry. With rising temperatures in spring, growth begins and watering is resumed, always after the substrate has dried out completely. In summer, it can receive deep, infrequent waterings, avoiding waterlogging and continuous moisture around the crown.
🌸 Flowering
It produces very striking flowers, generally orange to reddish-orange, tubular in shape with recurved petals. As in other Matucana species, the flowers emerge near the apex and can appear repeatedly during the growing season once the specimen reaches sufficient maturity. Their intense coloration contrasts particularly well with the green body and light-colored spines.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
