🌱 Morphology
A cultivar of Mammillaria spinosissima originated by a stable genetic mutation that radically transforms the species' spination. The stem is cylindrical, usually solitary though it may branch slowly, dark bluish-green, and reaches approximately 30 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter. The tubercles are conical and the axils show slight wool. The feature that makes it unmistakable is that each areole produces a single central spine, straight and very pronounced, about 1–3 cm long, while many areoles may lack spines entirely. In contrast to the type species, it does not present the dense crown of numerous radial and central spines. It is a cultivar obtained in the Canary Islands.

🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
‘Un Pico’ is a cultivar of horticultural origin, so it does not have a natural distribution of its own. Its species of origin, Mammillaria spinosissima, is Mexican and comes mainly from Guerrero and Morelos, where it grows in dry and warm environments. It belongs to the family Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae and tribe Cacteae.

It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −2 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimatized specimens. In pots, it is recommended to avoid lower temperatures if there is moisture in the substrate.

☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain its bluish-green color and, especially, to develop the characteristic single spine of each areole. A progressive adaptation to the sun is recommended. During active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and well-defined spination.

💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During the cold months, it is kept dry. From spring onwards, watering is gradually resumed, and during active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and infrequently, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. The irrigation period is concentrated mainly between spring and early autumn.

🌸 Flowering
It produces purple-red flowers, approximately 1–1.2 cm, which appear forming a crown around the top of the stem. Flowering is concentrated mainly between April and June and can be very abundant, forming a ring of color that contrasts with the solitary spine of the areoles.

🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis.
