Mammillaria nivosa Link ex Pfeiff.
🌱 Morphology
A globose cactus with a slightly depressed apex, which can reach about 15–20 cm in diameter and form colonies with age. The tubercles are conical, green to grayish-green, spirally arranged, with densely woolly axils. Each areole has numerous whitish or yellowish radial spines and several central ones that may darken with age. The flowers are yellow, bell-shaped, and appear around the apical zone. The club-shaped fruits ripen to a striking pinkish-red.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a Caribbean species distributed from the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos to Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles. It lives in highly exposed areas, on plains and rocky outcrops, within seasonally dry tropical environments. It is a species specifically adapted to withstand periods of drought and strong sunlight. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, within the Cacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 10b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to 4–5 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. It originates from tropical regions of the Caribbean and must be protected especially from frost and the humidity associated with cold.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and direct sun, with progressive adaptation to prevent sunburn. During active growth, an approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. Abundant ventilation is especially important in protected cultivation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Although it comes from tropical areas, it shows a marked adaptation to the seasonality of rainfall. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water deeply and at intervals, letting the substrate dry out completely before watering again. From autumn onwards, water intake is progressively reduced until it is kept practically dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It flowers upon reaching maturity, around 5 years of age. It produces yellow flowers, approximately 1–2 cm, which appear around the upper part of the plant. Flowering can be repeated in successive waves during the growing season when growing conditions are suitable.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
