🌱 Morphology
Relatively fast-growing, it may start as a solitary plant but with age develops large clusters through branching and, especially, through dichotomous division of the apex. The stems are globose to short-cylindrical, dark green to bluish-green, reaching up to about 20 cm in height. The tubercles are conical and their axils are provided with wool and numerous white bristles. It features 30–50 fine radial spines, white to yellowish-white, about 4–6 mm long, and 2–6 erect, rigid central spines, yellow, golden, or brown, some up to 3.5–4 cm long. With age, the combination of golden spines and white wool can almost completely conceal the green body.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is native to north-central Mexico, mainly from Guanajuato, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí, where it appears at approximately 1700 to 2400 m elevation in dry scrubland and rocky environments, growing even in crevices. In the Flora del Bajío, it is recognized within the subgenus Mammillaria, section Mammillaria, series Leucocephalae.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Resistance decreases considerably when there is moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun or very intense lighting is recommended, with an approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant lighting promotes compact growth and maintains the characteristic golden spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the substrate is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a crown of small carmine to purple-red flowers, with a darker central line, approximately 1–1.5 cm in diameter. In habitat, flowering has been observed between May and September, while in cultivation it is concentrated mainly between June and July. It may produce flowers intermittently over an extended season. The first flowering has been documented at 5–6 years from seed. The fruits are red and elongated, up to about 2 cm long.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
