Mammillaria marksiana Krainz
🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing cactus, initially solitary, although it may produce offsets with age and form small colonies. The body is globose and depressed at the apex, light green to yellowish-green, about 6–15 cm tall and 5–12 cm in diameter. The tubercles are pyramidal, slightly quadrangular, with densely woolly axils. The areoles feature variable spination, generally 4–21 fine, golden yellow to brownish spines, about 5–8 mm long; in adult specimens, the spines can become less numerous but more markedly golden. The combination of yellowish-green epidermis, white wool, and golden spines is especially characteristic.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to northwestern Mexico, mainly Durango and Sinaloa, with records also in other areas of western Mexico. It is found at approximately 400 to 2,000 m, growing on rocky slopes, especially on limestone walls and outcrops, in small pockets of organic matter and under the protection of nurse plants and dry deciduous forest. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily and Cacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when kept dry and for well-acclimated specimens. It is a species relatively sensitive to cold humidity; keeping the substrate completely dry during cold nights is especially important.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to develop its characteristic yellowish-green coloration and intensely golden spination. It tolerates direct sun, although in very hot summers it may appreciate light protection during the midday hours. A DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ during active growth promotes a compact habit and good floral induction.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. It is kept completely dry during winter. In spring, watering is gradually resumed, and during active growth, it is recommended to water deeply, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next application. Overhead watering should be avoided, as moisture damages the white wool of the axils.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are funnel-shaped, bright yellowish-green, approximately 1.5 cm in length and diameter, and appear forming a crown on the previous year's growth. Flowering occurs mainly between late winter and early spring, although some cultivation sources extend it into spring.
It has successive flowering over a relatively long period. The species is described as self-incompatible, so to obtain seeds, pollen from another compatible specimen is required.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technical square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
