🌵 Morphology
A slow-growing Mammillaria with a very compact habit, forming depressed globose stems, up to about 5 cm in diameter and 2 cm in height. Over time, it produces offsets and can form clusters. The tubercles are small and conical, with axils provided with wool and some bristles. It does not develop a central spine. The areoles are covered by 30–40 white or yellowish radial spines, about 3–7 mm long, which interlace to form a characteristic very dense mesh.
🌎 Distribution and habitat
A species from Mexico, present in the states of Coahuila and Zacatecas, where it grows at an altitude of approximately 900 to 1,800 m. It lives in crevices of limestone rocks and rocky slopes of semi-desert scrublands, where it can form small colonies. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC when kept completely dry. In winter, it is especially recommended to avoid the combination of low temperatures and humidity, to which this species is sensitive.
☀️ Lighting
We recommend full sun or afternoon sun, with high availability of photosynthetically active radiation (DLI PAR of 20–30 mol/m²/day). Intense lighting promotes compact growth and is important for achieving abundant flowering. Indoors, it needs plenty of light and a few hours of direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water moderately and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, water supply is gradually reduced, and it is kept dry during the winter. It is a species particularly sensitive to excess humidity, so it requires a very porous and fast-draining substrate.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly in April and May, forming a crown of flowers that are surprisingly large for the plant's small size. They are white, up to about 2–2.5 cm, with a characteristic purple-pink central stripe. Flowers can appear in abundance around the top of the stem. To induce good flowering, it needs plenty of light and a dry winter rest.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, you can supplement with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
