🌵 Morphology
One of the smallest and most unique Mammillaria. It forms subglobose stems, about 2.5–4 cm in diameter, with a short, napiform root. In the wild, most of the stem remains buried, with only the top few millimeters protruding from the ground. The tubercles are pyramidal, dark green, and the areoles produce between 17 and 28 fine, short, white radial spines, with no central spine. With age, it may form small clusters.
🌎 Distribution and habitat
It is a species microendemic to Oaxaca, Mexico, restricted to a small area of the Mixteca Alta, in the surroundings of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán valley. It grows in grasslands and open spaces in pine-oak forests, at an altitude of around 2,180 m, where the plants remain partially hidden under the soil. The species is listed as Endangered (EN) by the IUCN and its natural range is extraordinarily small. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC for short periods, provided it remains completely dry. In winter, it is recommended to protect it especially from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun is recommended, especially during the growth period. Insufficient lighting causes more open growth and excessive spacing of the areoles. Indoors, it needs a very bright location and, if necessary, supplementary artificial lighting.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water sparingly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced, and it is kept dry during the winter. It is a species especially sensitive to excess humidity due to its fleshy root, so it needs a very well-draining and aerated substrate.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly between October and November, producing flowers about 2 cm in size, light green to brownish in color, appearing near the apex. It is a surprisingly precocious species: the first flowering of cultivated plants has been documented at just 2–3 years of age, and flowers can appear even when the plant still retains its tiny size. The fruits take about seven months to mature and remain partially hidden within the body of the plant, a characteristic typical of Mammillaria in the Longiflorae series.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cacti NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
