🌱 Morphology
A small green sphere turned into a jewel of spines: its body is almost traced by a delicate web of white spines, among which stand out others that are more robust in reddish and chestnut tones. But it holds a second surprise: when it blooms, a crown of intense pink flowers surrounds the apex like a small diadem.
It is a globular cactus, generally solitary, although it can produce offsets with age. It features numerous conical tubercles covered by fine white or yellowish radial spines and several stronger central spines, ranging from reddish to dark chestnut hues. This combination creates an especially elegant contrast between the green of the body and the pattern of the spines. This is a Japanese selection related to Mammillaria discolor, known in cultivation as Ginsa Maru.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is a horticultural selection of Japanese origin linked to Mammillaria discolor, a species native to Mexico, from Hidalgo to Oaxaca, where it grows in arid zones and dry scrublands. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC if kept completely dry, is well acclimated, and the cold exposure is brief. In winter, it is particularly advisable to avoid the combination of low temperatures and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it needs intense lighting, with an approximate goal of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun, introduced gradually, helps maintain compact growth and dense spination.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest.
Growth is mainly activated from spring onwards. During this period, abundant watering is recommended, letting the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It is one of its greatest attractions: it produces intense pink flowers, more striking than the flowers usually described for Mammillaria discolor, and they appear forming a crown around the apex. In Madrid, it can bloom mainly between March and May.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
