🌱 Morphology
A relatively fast-growing, extraordinarily prolific Mammillaria that forms dense colonies of cylindrical, erect or semi-prostrate stems, 6–15 cm long and 1.5–3.7 cm in diameter. The body is bright green and covered by small, spirally arranged conical tubercles. Young areoles have some wool, while the axils remain bare or nearly so. It develops 14–30 fine, interlaced spines that are white, golden yellow, or brown, and generally 0–3 central spines, yellow or golden, sometimes with dark tips. The great variability of the species has given rise to numerous historical names, now included in its synonymy.

🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to Mexico, mainly in Guanajuato, Hidalgo, and Querétaro, where it grows at approximately 1,300 to 2,300 m on limestone soils as part of the xerophytic scrubland. It is an abundant species in much of its natural range and is considered of least concern globally.

It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Although there are references indicating even greater resistance, the more restrictive value is adopted for cultivation in Spain.

☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun to keep the stems compact, intensify the coloration of the spines, and promote flowering. Direct sun or very intense light is recommended, with progressive adaptation. As a reference, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is adequate during active growth.

💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry during the winter. Rapid drainage is essential to avoid rot.

🌸 Flowering
It produces small bell-shaped flowers of approximately 1–1.5 cm, generally cream white or pale yellow, often with a pink or reddish central line. They appear forming a crown on the top of the stems. In its habitat, flowering lasts approximately from February to June and can produce a second bloom later in the same year, so it can behave as a reblooming species under favorable conditions. There are observations of seed-grown specimens that have flowered for the first time at 2 years of age.

🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
