🌵 Morphology
One of the smallest and most delicate Mammillaria, with a globose to slightly flattened body, dark green in color, barely reaching 3.5–6 cm in diameter and 2–4 cm in height. It develops a characteristic napiform root that reaches into the crevices of volcanic rocks. The tubercles are small and conical, and the areoles are covered by numerous white, fine, and feathery radial spines, which give the cactus an almost cottony appearance. The flowers, relatively large in proportion to the tiny body, are cream to pale yellow and appear forming a crown around the apex. Under good conditions, it can form small clusters.
🌎 Distribution and habitat
A Mexican species whose type locality is found northeast of the city of Guanajuato, where it grows in xerophilous scrubland and among volcanic rocks, at approximately 1,800–2,000 m altitude. POWO lists Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí as its native area, although available field information is concentrated especially in Guanajuato. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Cacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC for short periods if kept completely dry. Cold accompanied by humidity significantly increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
It is recommended to provide plenty of light and soft or filtered sun, avoiding the most intense sun during the central hours of summer if the plant is not acclimatized. Abundant lighting promotes compact growth and regular flowering. Indoors, it needs to be placed next to a very bright window.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In autumn, water is progressively reduced, and it is kept completely dry during the winter. Due to its napiform root and sensitivity to rot, it needs a very airy substrate and fast drainage.
🌸 Flowering
It is a prolific flowering species when grown correctly. It produces cream or pale yellow flowers, surprisingly large in size relative to the body, which appear forming a crown around the apex. Plants grown from seed can begin to flower in approximately 3–4 years.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
