🌱 Morphology
Small, relatively slow-growing cactus that may remain solitary or form dense clusters through basal offshoots. The stems are globose to club-shaped, dark green, and the tubercles, remarkably elongated, measure approximately 1–1.1 cm in length. Its most distinctive feature is its 4–6(8) yellow, flexible, and straight to curved radial spines, which can reach about 3 cm in length and arch around the tubercles, forming a delicate tangle. It lacks central spines. This long and flexible spination clearly differentiates the typical form from cultivars such as ‘Bru’, which have been selected for their very short spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is a subspecies endemic to Mexico, restricted mainly to the state of Querétaro, where it grows between approximately 1300 and 2300 m in xerophytic scrub, especially in ravines and on rocky slopes. In the Flora del Bajío, it is recognized as one of the three infraspecific taxa of Mammillaria decipiens.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Special caution is recommended regarding the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
We recommend full sun or very intense lighting, with an approximate DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. High radiation promotes compact growth and abundant, well-developed spination.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. From autumn on, reduce supply progressively until keeping it dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small, white, and slightly scented flowers, approximately 1.5–1.8 cm, which appear between the tubercles and contrast with the yellow spines. In its natural habitat, it flowers mainly between September and December.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month alongside watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and helps maintain turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, you may supplement with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
