🌱 Morphology
Mammillaria generally solitary, slow-growing, with a globose stem that becomes short-cylindrical with age, light to dark green in color, up to about 15–20 cm in height and 9–10 cm in diameter. The tubercles are low, crowded, and conical-pyramidal. Its axils are progressively filled with abundant white wool and numerous fine bristles, creating a characteristic snow-like crown. It has 22–24 white radial spines, up to 40 in some specimens, and typically 2–4 central spines, occasionally up to 7, which are more robust and have brownish tips.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is native to northeastern Mexico, mainly from Coahuila, Nuevo León, Durango, San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas. It grows on rocky hillsides and slopes in desert scrub, at altitudes between approximately 1,200 and 2,400 m. The specific epithet chionocephala comes from the Greek chion, snow, and cephala, head, alluding to its abundant white wool.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC for short periods, provided the plant is fully hardened and the substrate is completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
Very abundant light is recommended, including full sun, avoiding only exposures capable of causing burns on unacclimated specimens. To maintain compact growth and encourage flowering, a DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is progressively reduced, and it is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly in spring, forming a crown of flowers approximately 1 cm in size, white, cream, or delicately pink. In cultivation, new batches of flowers may appear intermittently until summer. No reliable age has been found to determine the first flowering in years.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
