🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small cloud of cotton that has taken root: its very fine, soft, and interwoven white spines wrap around the body until it almost disappears under a silky mantle. But hidden amidst such delicacy are small hooks, generally reddish or brownish, which remind us that it is still a cactus. Over time, it can multiply from the base and become a true white pillow full of life.
The stems are globose, about 3–5 cm in diameter, although they can reach a larger size with age. The tubercles are conical-cylindrical and the areoles produce about 25–30 fine, white, and hairy radial spines, 6–20 mm long, which cross each other and almost completely cover the surface. Among them appear 1–4 more robust central spines, usually reddish or brown, and at least one usually ends in a characteristic hook.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to Mexico and is distributed mainly through San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas, in arid and semi-arid environments, on slopes and rocky walls, frequently in crevices and among vegetation that provides it with some protection. It lives at an altitude of approximately 1650 to 2300 m. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −7 ºC for brief periods if it remains completely dry and is well-acclimated. For its cultivation, it is especially important to avoid the coincidence of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it needs intense lighting, with an approximate goal of 18–25 mol/m²/day DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun after progressive acclimation, and good lighting favors a compact shape and dense white spines.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest.
During the active period, abundant watering is recommended, letting the substrate dry completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept almost dry, especially when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
Its small flowers, creamy white to pale yellow and occasionally with pink tones or a reddish central line, appear forming a crown around the top of the stem. In Madrid, flowering can occur mainly between April and July. After flowering, it develops elongated pink to red fruits.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
📏 The sizes of our basic collection xerophytes are as follows:
