Lobivia cinnabarina (Hook.) Britton & Rose · Scarlet Mogotilla
🌱 Morphology
Scarlet signal.. Solitary, globose and somewhat flattened cactus that can reach about 15 cm in diameter. The apex appears depressed and the approximately 20 ribs are irregular, sinuous, and divided into small tubercles or humps. The areoles produce around 8–12 thin, slightly curved radial spines of about 6–12 mm, and generally 2–3 somewhat more robust and curved central spines, which are especially visible in young specimens. The epidermis is bright green.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Bolivia, mainly in the departments of Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, and Potosí, where it grows at an altitude of approximately 2,500 to 3,400 m. It inhabits the prepuna and rocky terrain of inter-Andean valleys, among xerophytic scrub, and is subject to marked seasonality of rainfall and drought. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Trichocereeae tribe. Joël Lodé’s 2026 taxonomy maintains the name Lobivia cinnabarina.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens. Its high-mountain origin allows it to withstand cold nights, but it must be kept completely dry during periods of intense cold.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain compact growth and encourage well-developed spination. As a general guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it undergoes active growth, and it is recommended to water deeply once the substrate has completely dried out. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers emerge laterally, near the top of the body, and reach about 4 cm in diameter. They are bell-shaped to funnel-shaped and stand out for their vermilion red, scarlet red, or dark pink shades. They open during the day and provide a spectacular contrast with the green epidermis. The epithet cinnabarina refers precisely to the vermilion color of its flowers.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
