🌱 Morphology
From the heights... A small globose, depressed-globose, or shortly cylindrical cactus, generally solitary, about 4–6 cm tall and 6–7 cm in diameter. The epidermis is matte, grayish-green, and develops a highly thickened napiform root, adapted to rocky mountain soils. It typically presents 8–12 ribs, although they can reach up to about 26, straight or slightly inclined and weakly tuberculate. The areoles are separated by approximately 1.5 cm and produce 3–7 reddish or brownish radial spines, which become grayish with age, up to about 2 cm long. It does not develop central spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the province of Salta, in northwestern Argentina, especially in the Quebrada del Toro, where it grows at an altitude of approximately 2000 to 3000 m, among rocks and dry prepuna vegetation. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Trichocereeae tribe. It has historically been cultivated under the names Echinopsis chrysantha and Hymenorebutia chrysantha.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −9 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens. In cultivation, it is recommended to protect it from the combination of cold and humidity, keeping the substrate completely dry during winter.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and can be grown in full sun after progressive acclimation. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, water deeply, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. As temperatures and day length decrease, waterings should be progressively reduced until the plant is kept completely dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear laterally and open during the day. They are broadly bell-shaped or funnel-shaped, up to about 5 cm long, with golden yellow or orange petals and a characteristic darker red-purple throat. The contrast between the golden flower and the grayish-green epidermis is particularly attractive. The flowers may be slightly fragrant.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
