🌱 Morphology
With a blood-red color... Small cactus, generally solitary, with a globose and somewhat flattened body, with a depressed apex. It can reach about 6–8 cm in diameter. It presents approximately 22–25 ribs, initially rounded and later lower and sharper, divided into small tubercles by fine oblique grooves. The areoles are elongated and covered with white wool. It produces about 25 radial spines arranged in a pectinate form, slightly curved, which start out brown and acquire white or gray tones with age. The central spines differentiate progressively and usually point slightly downwards.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to northwestern Argentina, especially the province of Salta, in the surroundings of Santa Victoria and towards the Quebrada del Toro. It is found at approximately 3,000 to 3,500 m altitude, in high mountain grasslands and dry scrublands, on stony ground. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Trichocereeae tribe. Lobivia breviflora is the basionym and historical name of the CORRECT name, which is Echinopsis breviflora.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC in specimens that are dry, acclimatized, and protected from winter humidity. Its high-altitude origin favors good cold resistance.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain a compact habit and correctly develop its characteristic pectinate spination. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water deeply once the substrate has dried out completely. In autumn, watering should be progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry during the winter.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear laterally and are notable for their small floral tube, a characteristic that gives rise to the epithet breviflora, "short-flowered". They reach approximately 3 cm in length and 3.2 cm in diameter and exhibit an intense light red or bright red coloration.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
