Lithops herrei L.Bolus
🔍 Morphology
Known as living stone, this small succulent is formed by a single pair of fleshy leaves fused at the base. Lithops herrei has small to medium-sized bodies, about 3 cm wide, with a flat or slightly convex upper profile and an elliptical shape when viewed from above. The epidermis is whitish-grey, with opaque or partially translucent windows crossed by fine transparent lines and dots that outline small islands of grey-green. Its flowers are proportionally small and intense yellow, occasionally bronzed. It is distinguished from Lithops hookeri by its lighter tones, fine markings, and smaller flowers.
📍 Distribution and habitat
Native to the Richtersveld in the Northern Cape of South Africa and southern Namibia. It grows among outcrops of schist, quartzite, gneiss, and calcrete, where its colors allow it to camouflage among the stones. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. It is listed as Vulnerable (VU) due to its restricted distribution, habitat degradation, and the collection of wild specimens.
🌡️ Temperature
USDA zone 10a–11b. It tolerates minimum temperatures close to −1 ºC for short periods, provided the substrate remains dry. It should be protected from frost and especially the combination of cold and moisture. This hardiness rating is indicative, as there is no specific experimental evaluation of the species.
☀️ Lighting
It needs high light, with a target PAR DLI of 20–25 mol/m²/day during growth. Soft sunlight or bright partial shade is recommended during the hours of greatest intensity, especially during heatwaves, avoiding sudden changes in exposure.
🌸 Flowering
Central, solitary flowers resembling small daisies, dark yellow or bronzed in color, up to about 2.3 cm in diameter. In the Southern Hemisphere, it flowers mainly in autumn, so in Madrid it usually flowers in October–November. The flowers open in direct sunlight.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer and winter dormancy. After the annual leaf renewal, watering is resumed once the old leaves have completely been reabsorbed, generally in spring. During the intense heat of July and August, it enters eco-dormancy and should be kept practically dry. Watering is resumed in late summer or early autumn to promote growth and flowering. After flowering, watering is gradually reduced, and during winter leaf renewal, it should not be watered while the new leaves develop at the expense of the old ones. Allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings and do not water on a schedule, but according to the condition of the plant.
🚀 Nutrition
Its growth is improved with moderate nutrition, rich in assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 6-5-15 (3-3), avoiding excess nitrogen.
📏 This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
