🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent, stoloniferous, with woody, very thick and generally short stems, erect or decumbent, which can reach about 40 cm. The leaves are grouped in terminal rosettes and are sessile or subsessile, very thick, fleshy, and leathery. The blade can be ovate-spatulate, oblong, or almost orbicular, approximately 6–15 × 4–7 cm, with a base that narrows and clasps the stem. The margin can be entire, wavy-toothed, with rigid teeth, or even deeply divided in some forms.
Its most unique characteristic is the stolons, which grow from the plant and produce new rosettes; these, in turn, can develop new stolons. In nature, true networks of rosettes of different ages and sizes are formed this way. The species also presents notable variability in the size and color of the leaves, which has led to various forms selected in cultivation.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. Endemic species of Madagascar, mainly from the center and center-south of the island. It inhabits rocky and sunny places in seasonally dry environments.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11a
It is a warm-climate species that tolerates relatively cool temperatures if it remains dry. It is recommended to protect it from frost and, especially, to avoid letting the substrate remain damp during cold periods. The USDA zone is a guide and expresses the average annual minimum temperature of the zone, not an absolute minimum survival temperature.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR during growth. Direct sun, after progressive acclimation, promotes compact growth and good foliage coloration. With insufficient lighting, the stolons tend to elongate and the rosettes lose their compactness.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Summer dormancy. It is a species adapted to the alternation of dry and wet periods. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In winter, the frequency is significantly reduced, especially when temperatures are low. The stoloniferous nature means it can spread considerably in large containers, so it is advisable to leave space for the new rosettes to develop.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescences are axillary and usually appear in two very dense, opposite corymbiform cymes, supported by peduncles of about 15–30 cm. The flowers are erect, with a greenish calyx and a tubular corolla of approximately 7–12 mm. The color can range from white and pink to purple, and both the calyx and the corolla can be glabrous or have glandular hairs.
Under cultivation conditions in Spain, it can mainly be expected during winter and spring, although the timing may vary depending on temperature, lighting, and photoperiod.
🌿 Nutrition
Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended during the active growth period. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering to promote the development of the inflorescences.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
