🌱 Morphology
Silver Ruffles is a perennial shrubby succulent, branched from the base, which can reach approximately 50–60 cm. The stems become woody with age. Its fleshy leaves, 5–10 cm long, are obovate, spatulate, or elongated, and grayish-green to almost white due to a characteristic powdery waxy layer. Its most striking feature is its cartilaginous, strongly wavy, and curly margins, which can take on reddish tones under intense lighting. The apex features a small mucron, although it may be inconspicuous.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. Its natural range is located in the Cape region of South Africa, especially in dry and rocky environments of the Karoo. It grows as a xerophytic subshrub in areas with seasonal rainfall and long dry periods.

It is a succulent adapted to warm and dry conditions, although it tolerates occasional drops in temperature when the substrate remains completely dry. Protection against frost, persistent humidity, and temperatures near 0 °C is especially advisable when grown in pots.
☀️ Lighting
Very high lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact growth, the intense silver coloration, and the reddish tones of the margins, provided it is acclimatized gradually.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Summer dormancy. It grows primarily during periods of moderate temperatures. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, water intake is significantly reduced, keeping the substrate dry for longer periods. Excess moisture is one of the main cultivation risks.
🌸 Flowering
It produces an erect inflorescence that can reach about 40–70 cm, with hanging, tubular, or bell-shaped flowers, generally orange, reddish, or pink. Under cultivation conditions in Spain, flowering can occur mainly during spring and summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, following a moderate regimen and avoiding excess nitrogen. Before and during flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
