Haworthia beuknannii (Hayasi) 3419 BA | Haworthia steel windows of Skuitsberg
€21,20
🌱 Morphology
Haworthia robusta, a relatively slow-growing plant that develops rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves that are markedly recurved at their tips. The leaves, which are dark green, can reach about 2–3 cm in length and approximately 1.5 cm in width. Their apices are deeply truncated or notched, forming translucent surfaces marked by longitudinal lines that resemble small engraved windows. The margins feature firm and well-developed teeth, which can take on reddish tones with increased light exposure. The combination of voluminous leaves, pronounced windows, and spiny edges gives it a robust and sculptural appearance. It may occasionally produce offsets, although it does not always form abundant clumps.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
It comes from Skuitsberg, near Caledon, in the Western Cape, South Africa, within the botanical grid 3419 BA. It grows in narrow crevices in schistose terrain, where large plants have been observed despite the limited space for roots. The rock fissures facilitate drainage and allow the plant to be partially protected from the most intense sunlight. The region has a Mediterranean climate, with rainfall mainly in winter and dry summers; these conditions explain the importance of drainage and reduced watering during intense heat.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is best to keep it above -1°C and protect it from frost, especially when the substrate is moist. It is preferable to avoid both prolonged cold and the combination of low temperatures and root moisture.
☀️ Lighting
It needs abundant light, with soft sunlight or bright partial shade. Gradual lighting can intensify the reddish tones of the marginal teeth, but strong and sudden sunlight can cause burns. For reference, a PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and well-defined leaf windows.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its growth is encouraged during the cooler seasons. In autumn, winter, and spring, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry before the next watering. During the summer, reduce watering when temperatures are high and maintain excellent ventilation. Avoid waterlogging and persistent moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a slender, elongated inflorescence with narrow whitish flowers marked by greenish or brownish lines. Flowering is inconspicuous; the main ornamental interest lies in the truncated leaves, translucent windows, and marginal teeth.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Apply with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
