Haworthia pygmaea 'Mutant' | The Colossal Pygmy
€53,00
🌱 Morphology
A horticultural mutation of Haworthia pygmaea selected for the extraordinary development of its leaves. Despite its species name —pygmaea, “pygmy”—, this form features much larger leaves than usual, with a fleshy texture and a sculptural-looking leaf surface. The leaves usually show translucent windows on the back, with an irregular relief and rough texture, which become more evident as the plant matures. The shape and pattern of the windows can vary between specimens, so absolute uniformity should not be expected. The rosette diameter is around 10 cm, although the leaves can reach approximately three times the size of those of the common form.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
A horticultural selection originating from the mutant variation of Haworthia pygmaea, a species native to the province of Western Cape, South Africa, where it grows in dry and stony environments. It is not an independent botanical species and should not be automatically confused with other commercial hybrids of H. pygmaea.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is recommended to protect it from frost and damp cold, preferably keeping it above 5 °C. Actual resistance depends on acclimatization, ventilation, and the moisture level of the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Abundant indirect light or bright partial shade. As a starting point, a PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, adjusted according to the plant's response. Intense direct sunlight can cause burns and excessive reddish coloration; insufficient lighting favors a less compact rosette.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is recommended to water thoroughly during growth, allowing the substrate to dry before watering again. During periods of intense heat, it is advisable to reduce watering, increase ventilation, and prevent the substrate from remaining damp for too long. Growth usually resumes when temperatures drop at the end of summer.
🌸 Flowering
It produces an elongated flower stalk with small whitish, tubular flowers with greenish bands, characteristic of the genus. In mutant plants, differences in floral development may occur; it has not been confirmed that all specimens of this selection exhibit the same fertility.
🌿 Nutrition
It is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., NPK 3-2-8 with calcium and magnesium, during active growth. It is advisable to reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy and avoid the accumulation of salts in the substrate.
10x10 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
