🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing succulent with an unmistakable appearance, featuring thick, short leaves clustered in a nearly buried rosette. Its leaves, roughly rectangular in cross-section, end in flat or slightly convex surfaces, translucent and decorated with reticulated patterns, like small windows of cut glass. The coloration varies between olive green, dark green, and brownish tones. In its habitat, most of the leaf remains below ground level, with only the transparent ends exposed, which capture light and reduce water loss.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
It is native to the Little Karoo, in the Western Cape province, South Africa, especially in the area south of Calitzdorp. Its natural distribution is restricted. It grows in stony mineral soils, among quartz and other rocks, in arid environments where the surrounding vegetation offers partial protection. It remains partially buried and can pull itself deeper into the soil via contractile roots during unfavorable periods. Rainfall is variable, and local conditions can alternate between dry periods and episodes of moisture that can be utilized for growth. Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures close to −1 °C for brief periods, provided the substrate is completely dry. It is preferable to protect it from frost and the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires abundant, filtered light or bright semi-shade. Avoid intense direct sun, especially during the Madrid summer. An indicative DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ allows for balanced growth and helps maintain the translucent appearance of the windows.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its activity depends on the combination of temperature, lighting, and water availability, and can slow down with either extreme heat or cold. Water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before repeating. During heat waves, reduce watering if growth stops. Rapid drainage is essential to protect its fleshy roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a thin floral stalk with small, whitish flowers, which are inconspicuous compared to the appeal of its leaf windows. Flowering usually occurs during favorable growth periods.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with high potassium and bioavailable calcium content. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
