Haworthia maculata var. maculata | Brandvlei Leopard Haworthia
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small stemless succulent forming compact rosettes up to about 8 cm in diameter, with numerous fleshy, upright or spreading leaves. They have purple-green tones and are speckled with lighter or darker patches, with small teeth on the margins and keel. The coloration can intensify to acquire deep purple hues during dry and hot periods. It grows slowly and can produce offsets at the base, forming clumps. Its camouflage among the stones makes the rosettes difficult to distinguish in its natural habitat.
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
It is native to the province of Western Cape, South Africa, especially the area around Brandvlei Dam, south of Worcester, with documented populations in the nearby mountains, such as Audensberg and Keeromsberg, and in other localities in the region. It grows among quartzite stones and in rock crevices, where it remains partially hidden and protected from direct sunlight. Rainfall is seasonal and the plants withstand prolonged dry periods; fast drainage and protection from intense sun are essential in cultivation. Bruce Bayer notes that it presents morphological similarities and transitions with Haworthia herbacea, reflecting the variability of the group.
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is advisable to protect it from frost and keep the substrate dry during cold spells. As a precautionary measure, it is recommended to avoid temperatures below -1 °C.
☀️ Lighting
It needs abundant light, preferably filtered or with soft sun. An approximate PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹promotes compact growth. Intense lighting, combined with seasonal dryness, can accentuate its purple tones, but strong summer sun can cause burns.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its growth depends on the balance between temperature, light and water availability. It is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry before repeating. During extreme heat or periods of lower activity, watering is spaced out to avoid root damage.
🌸 Flowering
It normally flowers in late spring or southern autumn, with flowering references in October and November. It produces a delicate inflorescence with small whitish flowers, with a yellowish throat and greenish lines.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during periods of dormancy or inactivity.
Gourmet black 9x9 cm pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
