🌱 Morphology
A relatively slow-growing succulent that forms compact rosettes and proliferates through offsets, eventually creating dense clusters. Its leaves are fleshy, thick, ovate-lanceolate in shape, and arranged upright or slightly open. They present shades ranging from light to dark green, with small translucent markings and longitudinal lines that form delicate reticulations. The tips can be more or less truncated and show well-defined leaf windows. Under moderate stress conditions, they acquire reddish, coppery, or purplish hues. Compared to other *Haworthia retusa*, it stands out for its larger, turgid, and more extended leaves.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
It is native to the Western Cape, South Africa, with populations ranging from the surroundings of Bredasdorp and Swellendam to Stilbaai and the Kafferkuils River, east of Riversdale. The typical form is especially associated with Stilbaai. It grows on steep rocky slopes, where its roots find well-drained crevices, and it can form dense colonies on rock faces. Environmental conditions vary between locations, which explains differences in the size, arrangement, and transparency of the leaves.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is advisable to keep it above -1 °C, especially if the substrate is moist. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frost and cold combined with humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires abundant filtered light or bright partial shade. Gradual exposure to more light can intensify its coppery tones, but intense summer sun can cause burns. A DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and good definition of the leaf windows.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Growth is usually most active during cool and temperate seasons. In autumn, winter, and spring, it is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out before the next watering. During episodes of intense heat, reduce watering and maintain excellent ventilation. Stagnant water around the roots can cause rot.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a slender, elongated inflorescence with small, whitish tubular flowers, streaked with greenish or brownish lines. The flowering is relatively discreet and less striking than in other species of the genus.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium, is recommended. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
9x9 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
