🌱 Morphology
A small succulent that forms compact rosettes only 2.5–4 cm in diameter and produces abundant offsets, creating dense clumps over time. Its numerous, rigid, upright leaves are narrow, triangular in cross-section, and yellowish green. The surface has a slightly rough texture and a subtle reticulated pattern. The margins and lower keel are armed with small translucent teeth that give it a spiny appearance. Its specific name literally means “with green spines.”
🌍 Origin, habitat and family
It is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, with a limited distribution around Herbertsdale, the Gouritz River Gorge, Mossel Bay and Great Brak. It grows in rocky terrain, among scrub and fynbos vegetation, where drainage is rapid and other plants provide some protection from the sun. Populations vary in size and color depending on their origin and habitat conditions.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures as low as −5 °C if the substrate stays dry and the frost is brief. It is best protected from prolonged cold and, especially, from the combination of low temperatures and moisture.
☀️ Lighting
It prefers bright, filtered light or bright partial shade. It tolerates some gentle sun exposure, but intense heat can dehydrate it and damage the leaves. A target DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ encourages compact growth and good coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Growth is usually concentrated in the cooler months. In autumn, winter and spring, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry before watering again. In summer, reduce watering during periods of intense heat while ensuring good ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a slender, elongated inflorescence up to about 25 cm long, with small, whitish tubular flowers and greenish or brownish lines. The flowering is inconspicuous and is overshadowed by the appeal of its spiny rosettes.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing period, we recommend Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., with its high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. Apply it with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
