🌱 Morphology
A historic hybrid cultivar with relatively slow growth, forming compact rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves arranged in a spiral. Its leaves are triangular, relatively flat, and very dark green, which can reach almost black shades. They feature translucent windows crossed by fine reddish lines, especially visible when light passes through them. Transparent areas can also appear on the underside, creating a dark stained-glass effect. The intensity of the coloration depends on lighting, temperature, and the plant's condition: in insufficient light, it can take on a more evident green, while adequate lighting conditions favor its somber appearance. It multiplies through basal offsets.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
This is an old horticultural cultivar of unconfirmed hybrid ancestry. Its name appears in specialized Alsterworthia International publications and European collector catalogs; by 2017, material identified as ‘Black Major’ was already circulating from E. Specks’ collection in Germany. It has not been possible to verify that this nursery was its original breeder, nor are its parents known for certain. As a cultivated hybrid, it has no wild locality or natural habitat of its own.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is sensitive to frost. To keep the plant in good condition, a cool wintering is recommended, preferably at 5–6 °C or above, keeping the substrate dry or barely moist.
☀️ Lighting
It needs abundant light to maintain its dark coloration, but must be protected from intense direct sun during the middle hours of summer. A guideline DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ allows for adjusting the lighting without subjecting the leaves to excessive radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the cool seasons, water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out before the next watering. In summer, especially between July and mid-August, its growth may slow down significantly: it is advisable to greatly reduce watering, maintain excellent ventilation, and avoid keeping the substrate moist during periods of intense heat.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a thin, elongated inflorescence with small, whitish, tubular flowers, which are discreet compared to the appeal of its dark leaves and reddish lines. No reliable data is available to establish an exclusive flowering season for this cultivar.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., with high potassium and bio-assimilable calcium content, is recommended. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
8x8 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
