Haworthia beukumanii IB12 | The Retusa Gem of Skuitsberg
€26,50
🌱 Morphology
Compact-growing Haworthia, with fleshy, robust leaves arranged in a rosette. The leaves have retuse tips, meaning they end in a widened, sunken, or truncated apical surface instead of a sharp point. The margins and keel may show small teeth or soft spines, characteristic features of this entity. The rosette can take on a solid, sculptural appearance, with relatively wide leaves and coloration ranging from green to brown tones depending on the lighting and growing conditions. Both the Japanese Hayasi and the German Ingo Breuer consider it a distinct species, although Kew still considers it a variety of Haworthia mirabilis, with which it has no morphological resemblance.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
A species according to Ingo Breuer's taxonomic criteria, originating from South Africa. The entity is associated with the Skuitsberg area, north of Caledon in the Western Cape province, where these Haworthias grow in rock crevices and other sheltered spots. The name beukmannii honors C. Beukman.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It is recommended to protect it from frost and preferably keep it above 5°C, especially if the substrate is moist. In winter, it needs good ventilation and a rapidly draining substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Bright, filtered light or bright partial shade. As an initial guideline, a PAR DLI of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, adjusted to the plant's response. Proper lighting helps keep the rosette compact; intense direct sunlight can cause burns and excessive browning.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Water thoroughly during active growth and allow the substrate to dry out before watering again. During periods of intense heat, it is advisable to reduce watering and improve ventilation. Both waterlogging and keeping the roots dry for excessively long periods should be avoided when the plant resumes growth.
🌸 Flowering
Produces an elongated inflorescence with small whitish flowers that are tubular and have greenish bands, characteristic of the Haworthia genus.
🌿 Nutrition
Use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., NPK 3-2-8 with calcium and magnesium during active growth. It is advisable to reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy and avoid the accumulation of salts in the substrate.
10x10 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with a substrate enriched with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
