🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing miniature succulent that forms stemless, usually solitary rosettes about 3–10 cm in diameter. Its thick, firm leaves are dark green, greenish-brown, or nearly black. The ends are truncated or slightly sunken, with broad, translucent windows crossed by fine longitudinal lines or reticulated patterns resembling a fingerprint. The apices are rounded, not pointed, and the margins and keel can be smooth or feature tiny teeth. The plant often remains partially sunken in the substrate, an adaptation that protects its leaves from radiation and limits water loss.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
It is endemic to the Little Karoo, in the Western Cape, South Africa, with populations between Oudtshoorn, De Rust, and Uniondale, as well as more western records at Rooinek Pass. It inhabits dry mountain slopes, fynbos and renosterveld shrublands, on stony terrain and transition zones toward spekboom vegetation. It frequently grows protected under small shrubs, such as Drosanthemum delicatulum. Rainfall is irregular and may show bimodal patterns depending on the locality.
Haworthia bayeri was described by J. D. Venter and S. A. Hammer in 1997. The name honors Bruce Bayer, one of the leading authorities in the study of the genus.
Family Asphodelaceae · Tribe Alooideae · Genus Haworthia.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures close to -1°C if the substrate remains dry and exposure is brief. It is advisable to protect it from frost and prolonged cold humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires abundant filtered light or semi-shade. Intense sun can burn the leaf windows and alter their coloration. A recommended DLI PAR of 8–15 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and highlights the leaf pattern.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It can resume growth when moderate temperatures, proper lighting, and available moisture coincide. It is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. During extreme heat or cold, reduce water intake and avoid waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a slender inflorescence that can reach about 30 cm, with small whitish tubular flowers streaked with darker lines. It generally flowers during the austral spring, although the timing may vary depending on the population and cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., which is high in potassium and bioavailable calcium, is recommended. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during rest or dormancy periods.
