€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small cactus with a flattened body, dark green to bluish-green, which produces numerous offsets from the base and eventually forms large, multi-headed mounds. Each stem reaches approximately 3.5–6 cm in diameter and up to 6 cm in height. It features 8–12 low, rounded ribs, divided into small tubercles. The areoles are equipped with 7–14 fine, white, bristle-like radial spines, usually recurved, and 1–3 white or brownish central spines, which may be absent.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to north-central Argentina, mainly in the provinces of Córdoba and San Luis. It lives at approximately 1,000 to 2,000 m in open mountainous environments with rocky outcrops, grasslands, and shallow soils. Its habitat explains its exceptional cold resistance and its adaptation to dry periods.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereae ·
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −12 ºC, for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. It is one of the Gymnocalycium species with the greatest cold tolerance.
☀️ Lighting
A very bright exposure is recommended, from bright partial shade to mild direct sun. For compact growth and abundant flowering, it is advisable to exceed 20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, avoiding the most intense summer sun if it causes overheating.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water supply is progressively reduced until keeping it completely dry during winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces extraordinarily large flowers in relation to the size of the body, bell-shaped to infundibuliform, generally white, pale pink, or pink, about 3.5–5 cm in diameter. It is one of the earliest-flowering Gymnocalycium: in its Argentine habitat, it begins during the austral spring, often flowering from September, while in cultivation in the northern hemisphere, it usually does so in late spring and early summer. Flowering has been documented from approximately 4–5 years in cultivation.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
