🌱 Morphology
A vigorous perennial succulent that develops branched stems, initially upright and later decumbent or trailing, capable of reaching about 30 cm in length. It forms loose rosettes 4–12 cm in diameter, with fleshy, obovate leaves ending in a short tip. Its most striking feature is the whitish pruinose coating on the leaves, which can be silver-grey, bluish-green, or lavender, and may take on pink tones under intense light. The leaves detach easily and root very readily, allowing for easy propagation.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Family Crassulaceae It is a species of Mexican origin, associated by taxonomic sources with Tamaulipas, in the northeast of the country. Its exact wild distribution and original habitat are insufficiently documented. The name paraguayense is misleading: it is not native to Paraguay. It is also known as a ghost plant or mother-of-pearl plant.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a. Tolerates minimum temperatures close to −6 ºC in dry conditions and with acclimatization, although prolonged frosts and winter humidity can cause damage. In Madrid, it is advisable to protect it from persistent rains and intense cold.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative PAR DLI: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant light promotes compact rosettes and pink or lavender hues. It tolerates bright partial shade, although it may grow more open and lose color intensity. It must be acclimatized to direct sunlight, especially before the Madrid summer.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. Although it tolerates periods of drought, regular watering during growth promotes the development of stems and rosettes. In winter, watering should be significantly reduced, avoiding wet substrate at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
Produces flower stems with star-shaped flowers in white, sprinkled with small reddish spots on the petals. Flowering usually occurs in spring.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
