🌱 Morphology
A very rare and beautiful miniature succulent that forms mats, with stems that are initially ascending and become decumbent with age, reaching about 20 cm in height. The leaves are fleshy, erect, triangular to nearly cylindrical in cross-section, green, and feature very striking white margins. They are arranged in decussate pairs and are strongly anisophyllous: one leaf of each pair reaches about 4–6.5 cm, while the other measures barely 0.8–1.4 cm. During the dry season, they can acquire reddish hues.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
A species endemic to South Africa, distributed from Klaarstroom to Graaff-Reinet, in the interior of the Cape provinces. It grows on quartz and on stony shale and silt surfaces of the Karoo, within Eastern Fynbos-Renosterveld and Rainshadow Valley Karoo communities. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, and SANBI classifies it as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light. During active growth, it can be grown in full sun or very bright partial shade, ensuring availability of more than 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. During periods of very high temperatures, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense midday sun.
🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary, pedunculate, bright yellow flowers, which can reach several centimeters in diameter. Flowering occurs mainly during the austral winter, which is approximately equivalent to June–August in Spain.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. Its habitat receives rainfall in both winter and summer, so activity may respond to humidity and temperature conditions rather than a rigid calendar. During growth, water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In periods of extreme heat, reduce watering and resume it when favorable growth conditions return.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering while avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
