Glandulicactus crassihamatus (F.A.C.Weber) Backeb.
🌱 Morphology
Generally solitary cactus, globose to shortly cylindrical, up to about 10–15 cm tall and 15 cm in diameter. It features up to 13 thick, heavily tuberculated ribs, with a characteristic areolar groove that runs from the top of the tubercle to the axil. Small extrafloral nectaries appear in this groove, a feature that explains the name Glandulicactus. The spines are robust and very striking: several flattened radial spines in reddish, chestnut, and grayish tones, and several central ones, including a lower one that is strongly hooked, which can reach several centimeters in length.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Species endemic to Mexico, mainly in Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí, where it grows in xeric scrublands on rocky and calcareous terrain. Populations are known around San Luis de la Paz at approximately 1,800 to 2,100 m. The field number CH 369, for example, comes from San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, at 2,030 m. It belongs to the family Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae, and tribe Cacteae.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Its mountainous habitat allows it to withstand frosts, but in cultivation, it is advisable to keep it completely dry during cold episodes.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense light and several hours of direct sun, with progressive acclimatization. During active growth, a PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. Intense sun promotes compact spination and a glaucous epidermis.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. It is kept dry during the winter. In spring, watering is gradually resumed; during active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely. At the end of summer and autumn, watering is progressively reduced.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms upon reaching maturity, around 4-5 years of age. The flowers, about 3–4 cm, are very characteristic, in dark purple tones, and appear in the apical area on the current year's growth. The main flowering occurs between March and May. It can produce several buds simultaneously, and after intense summer rains, additional episodes have been observed until August; therefore, it may present more than one flowering pulse within the same season, although not necessarily on a regular basis.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis.
